Max Underwood Photography

Max Underwood was born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where the beautiful southwestern landscapes and rich cultural history have inspired him to pursue photography as a passion and a career.

Close mentorship by photographers Janet Russek and David Scheinbaum, and having the opportunity to help develop prints from original Ansel Adams negatives with photographer Alan Ross, has greatly shaped Underwood’s knowledge and experience, both behind the lens and in the darkroom. In 2011, Underwood had the opportunity to intern under fashion and portrait photographer Valerie Santagto.

Outside of such photography greats such as Ansel Adams, Sebastiao Salgado, and Henri Cartier-Bresson, Underwood has also been influenced by Impressionist painters. Interest in the compositions and textures of Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas, can be seen in Underwood’s abstractions, patterns and non-narrative imagery.
